چکیده

The perspective of detectability of Galactic dark matter subhaloes on the Fermi satellite is investigated in this work. Under the assumptions that dark matter annihilation accounts for the “GeV excess” of the Galactic diffuse γrays discovered by EGRET and the γ-ray flux is dominated by the contribution from subhaloes of dark matter, we calculate the expected number of dark matter subhaloes that Fermi may detect. We show that Fermi may detect a few tens to several hundred subhaloes in 1-year all sky survey. Since EGRET observation is taken as a normalization, this prediction is independent of the particle physical property of dark matter. The uncertainties of the prediction are discussed in detail. We find that the major uncertainty comes from the mass function of subhaloes, i.e., whether the subhaloes are “point like” (high-mass rich) or “diffuse like” (low-mass rich). Other uncertainties like the background estimation and the observational errors will contribute a factor of 2 ∼ 3. Improving the Angular Resolution of Egret and New Limits on Supersymmetric Dark Matter near the Galactic Center

Using the EGRET data and an improved point source analysis, including an energy dependent point spread function and an unbinned maximum likelihood technique, we have been able to place considerably lower limits on the gamma ray flux from the galactic center region. We also test this method on known sources, the Crab and Vela pulsars. In both cases, we find that our method improves the angular p...

Revealing dark matter substructure with anisotropies in the diffuse gamma-ray background

The majority of gamma-ray emission from Galactic dark matter annihilation is likely to be detected as a contribution to the diffuse gamma-ray background. I show that dark matter substructure in the halo of the Galaxy induces characteristic anisotropies in the diffuse background that could be used to determine the small-scale dark matter distribution. I calculate the angular power spectrum of th...

Glast Dark Matter Search

The GLAST Large Area Telescope [1], scheduled for launch in 2006, is a next generation space based gamma ray telescope which will improve in point source sensitivity by a factor of 30 over that of EGRET [2] below 10 GeV, and extend beyond EGRET up to 300 GeV. Thus GLAST offers a unique opportunity to discover WIMP dark matter through precision studies of gamma rays produced in pair annihilation...

The Search for Dark Matter via Gamma Rays from Astronomical Sources Using EGRET and GLAST

EGRET, aboard NASA's CGRO satellite, has made important contributions to establishing limits on WIMP dark matter in the galaxy. This paper will review these EGRET results. Based on past limits and theoretical estimates, future potential dark matter results from GLAST are projected.

Gamma-ray detection from neutralino annihilation in non–universal SUGRA scenarios

We analyze the indirect detection of neutralino dark matter in supergravity scenarios with non-universal soft scalar and gaugino masses. In particular, the gamma-ray flux arising from the galactic center due to neutralino annihilation is computed. In important regions of the parameter space it can be increased significantly (about two orders of magnitude) with respect to the universal scenario....
